Event Wrap Up

Max Adventure Race Lake Macquarie

Saturday 11 February

Lake Macquarie, NSW

Over 350 excited adventure racers gathered on the shores of pristine Lake Macquarie on Saturday for the first leg of the 2023 Max Adventure Race Series. There was a broad cross section of participants, serious (or not so serious) teams on the longest Classic Course, plenty of first-timers lining up for the Novice Course and over 50 younger racers on the brand-new Kids Course.

The hot weather made the course tougher than normal with one experienced team calling it the toughest course in a decade. Congratulations to all teams that tackled the course and gave it their all, you should all be stoked at your achievements!

The course either started or finished with a paddle on Lake Macquarie then the teams rode up and over to the ocean side of the Pacific Hwy. Next up was the rogaine section of the course, for many teams this was their favourite leg, seeing the different strategies and route choices play out. Did teams collect the checkpoints along the coastal rock platforms that were a bit further away? Or did they tackle the off-track navigation to collect those checkpoints closer to the transition area?

After the rogaine the teams rode back across to the lake side of the course and the welcome site of the finish line.

Earlier in the day over 50 younger racers participated in the first ever Kids Course at this venue. The kids were full of energy and embraced the challenge, mountain biking (most even took on the more technical route choice), a quick kayak on the lake followed by a water side run leg to finish off. There were plenty of tired smiles at the end, smiles that grew even wider when the finishers medal was hung around their necks.

Thanks to our event sponsors Lake Macquarie City Council and Wilde Isotonic for their support and thanks to the crew from 1st Belmont Scout group who were manning the BBQ all day and to our legendary volunteers who came along to assist on the day.

Entries for the next NSW leg of the Max Adventure Race series in the Royal National Park, Sydney on the 3rd of June, are now open so sign up HERE and start planning your next event in the great outdoors. We are pretty confident it won’t be as hot in June!
